Hewett urodził się 5 kwietnia 1921 r. w Worthing, Sussex, Anglia. Jest z pochodzenia Irlandczykiem. Hewett studiował w Beaumont College. Hewett nigdy nie był żonaty i nie miał dzieci. W późniejszych latach życia cierpiał na artretyzm i cukrzycę. Hewett zmarł 3 sierpnia 2001 roku w swoim domu w Los Angeles z powodu powikłań cukrzycy. Miał 80 lat.
